The Cape Breton Open returned to Sydney this summer, for the second year since its 11-year hiatus. The five-round Swiss tournament was held at Cape Breton University, and drew players from Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia.
Kyle Creamer won the event with a score of 4.5/5 (Prize: $330), coming through in a nail-biting last round game against Calvin Scallion. Donald MacLean and Aspen (Joseph) Jewells tied for second place with 4/5 (Prize: $160 each). Remi Petch won the U1600 prize with 3.5/5 (Prize: $100). Nam Anh (William) Nguyen and Mihan Shah tied for top unrated player with 3/5 (Prize: $30 each).
The event had a great turnout, with 25 players attending. Ella Dubinsky served as arbiter.
The event was sponsored by Sobeys, Mike Tobin, and A&L Parking.
After the tournament, Kyle Creamer laughed and said, “That was the most stressful weekend of my life.” The lion of Cape Breton then added, “It was a really fun weekend! There are a lot of great chess players in Cape Breton, and we had several strong players travel from other parts of Nova Scotia to play in the tournament. I really had to fight for every point.
Everyone I spoke to said they had a really great time, which is delightful to hear as an organizer.”
The Cape Breton Open will return in August 2026.
