Kaven Sharma wins Cape Breton Tornado 2026

The Cape Breton Tornado returned to Sydney this spring! The five-round Swiss tournament was held at Cape Breton University, and drew players from across Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia.

Kaven Sharma won the event with an impressive score of 4.5/5 (Prize: $330), winning a sharp game in the final round on board 1 against Donald MacLean. Kyle Creamer finished in second place with 4/5. There was a three-way tie for third place between Donald MacLean (Prize: $100), Matthew Niznansky, and Tommy Dang, all with 3.5/5. Matthew also won the U1600 prize (Prize: $100). Tommy also won the prize for top unrated player (Prize: $100).

Kaven will have his name engraved on the P.W. Cup, just the second person to achieve this honor. Congratulations, Kaven!

After the event, Kaven said he was very happy to be the winner of a classical tournament, which he has always longed for. He joked to his Dad, saying “See papa, I told you I could play better than the Lion and Tiger of Cape Breton!”, referring to two of the higher-rated competitors in the event, Kyle and Donald. With his excellent performance, he certainly proved that he can compete with the best! Kaven’s Dad wisely told him, “That’s a good start, but the journey just starts here and you have to compete against lots of lions and tigers in the big gamut of chess.”

The event had a great turnout, with 25 players attending. Ella Dubinsky served as arbiter.

The event was sponsored by Mike Tobin and Brandon Creamer. Thank you, both!

The next event in Cape Breton will be the Cape Breton Open, tentatively scheduled for August 7th, 8th, and 9th. The Cape Breton Tornado will return in May 2027.
