Hou Yifan, 4-time Women’s World Chess Champion, will be the feature guest at Pawn Wise: The Atlantic All-Ages Chess Festival to be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, July 31 to August 4, 2020.
Yifan will be joined by child prodigy, Dommaraju Gukesh, 13, 2nd youngest player ever to attain the title of grandmaster, and by Evgeny Bareev, reigning Canadian champion and once 2nd rated player in the world. Bareev will play in the Canadian Seniors Chess Championship, being held in the Maritimes for the first time. Gukesh will star in the inaugural Nova Scotia Mayflower Open as the likely top seed.
Both tournaments take place at Saint Mary’s University.
The festival’s side events include a Scholastic Chess Exhibition and Chess Considered – Four Questions: A Panel. Both occur at the Halifax Central Library. In the latter, international scholars will discuss chess as it relates to game theory, music, artificial & human intelligence, sport, therapy, and brain health for seniors. The panel event is open to the public.
