Nova Scotia CLOSED 2020 (by invitation only)

The Nova Scotia Closed Championship will run July 3-5, 2020 at MSVU, McCain Centre, room 105.

The Nova Scotia Closed is NOT open to the public to play in. Being a closed event, NOT AN OPEN EVENT, it is by INVITATION ONLY. That means that only the players who have already been invited can play.

However, people are welcome to come and watch the games being played. 

The Closed is run to determine the provincial champion.

Note:

All three boards for the Nova Scotia Closed will be played on DGT boards and will be viewable online, as they occur live. The following is the link to DGT Live, to view the games:

The above link to DGT Live will be the one used throughout the entire tournament to view the games.

On the DGT Live interface, to switch between games and rounds, click the blue title across the top of the screen that shows “Player vs Player” and then the rounds and games will be selectable.

The round times may vary, but they will be close to the following:

Round 1: Friday night: 6 pm.

Round 2: Saturday morning: 10 a.m.

Round 3: Saturday night: 4 p.m.

Round 4: Sunday morning: 10 a.m.

Round 5: Saturday night: 4 p.m.

Here is some more information on the Nova Scotia Closed Championship:

Every year the Nova Scotia Closed Championship is held, bringing together 6 of the top players in Nova Scotia for a premier round robin event to determine the provincial chess champion.

Rules for Qualification

-Player must be listed as a Nova Scotia player on the Chess Federation of Canada website.
-Player’s primary residence must be in Nova Scotia.
-Player must have played at least 8 games in NSCA organized open events over the past two calendar years. (For example, to qualify for the 2019 tournament, a player must have played 8 games in NSCA organized open events between January 2017 and December 2018.)

The tournament will consist of 6 players based on the following criteria:

-Reigning Nova Scotia Closed Champion
-5 Highest Rated Players in Nova Scotia

The rating list used to select the highest rated players will be the official Chess Federation of Canada rating list with the following filters:

-Province selected as Nova Scotia
-Played a tournament within the last 2 years
-Current member or expired within the last 3 years

The list can be found by clicking here. Note that provisional players (players who have not yet played 25 CFC rated games) do not appear on the CFC list, but will be invited as long as they meet the Rules for Qualification listed above.

Invitations will be sent out in January of the same year as the event.
